Andrea Rangel's Woodsmoke & Ash: Knits for Men
features seven stylish yet practical designs. Rangel shares her
inspiration for this collection..."When I first began designing this collection,
I had a vision: classy, interesting knits that men would want to wear as well as
knit. Having lived in both the city and the country, I have found inspiration in
both the practical casualness of the urban Northwest lifestyle, as well as the
earthy outdoorsiness of the country. Both places meet in this collection, which
melds simplicity, masculinity, and style."
Briquette
is a good scarf is more than just a way to stay warm, it’s part of the wearer’s
personality. Enter Briquette. This cozy long scarf features a highly textured
stitch pattern that’s simple to knit, with an easy-to-follow chart and a pattern
that’s memorizable, yet varied enough to keep you interested. It’s perfect
for men or women, and can be easily customized in width and length. Briquette
works well in many different yarns, from a rugged semi-solid or tweedy wool for
winter comfort, to a plant fiber blend for a breezier style. The boxes
stitch pattern is charted and written.

Char
is a classic-looking glove designed for maximum durability. Sock yarn and
a textured slip stitch pattern create a strong fabric that remains sophisticated
enough for daily wear. They’re visually attractive without being too
ornamental, and the slip stitch pattern is the perfect showcase for hand-dyed
yarns. A braided rib cuff keeps wrists snug and warm, while the left and right
hands are worked differently for the best fit possible. Simple but
engaging stitch patterns and clear instructions make this a very accessible
pattern.

Style, warmth and class combine in the
Heartwood
hat. It’s a surprisingly quick color work project with a subtle masculine edge.
The knitted-in hem and scroll color work pattern make it extra warm, while using
a woolen spun yarn like Brooklyn Tweed Shelter keeps it lightweight.
Heartwood is knit from the bottom up, with full fashion decreases to create a
square-shaped top. It’s also a great way to use up remainders of yarn.

Plantago was designed to the exact
specifications of a Pacific Northwest outdoorsman who wanted practical, durable,
winter wear. Super bulky wool and tightly-knit ribbing create a very warm
and insulating fabric. Comfortable and practical,
Plantago
is slim-fitting with enough stretch in the fabric to give the wearer ease of
movement. The tall fold-over collar provides versatile warmth: zip
it up completely for a cowl collar, unzip it a bit to allow the collar to lay
flat, or unzip completely to cool down. Worked at a huge gauge, it knits
up quickly and seamlessly, with easy raglan yoke shaping.

Resin
is the perfect boot sock for active guys. The socks knit up quickly, with
a geometric stitch pattern that creates extra warmth, and a dense gauge in DK
weight yarn that makes for great durability. They’re simple but
interesting to knit, with a engaging and easily memorized stitch pattern that
excels at showing off hand-dyed yarn.
Resin is knit toe up with a short row heel,
which means the height is customizable. Use exactly half your yarn for
socks that match perfectly. The hemmed cuff provides a clean, comfortable
top.

Bring on the chill. Using thickly
spun yarn, Sphagnum
knits up quickly to create a super bulky ribbed beanie that will keep a guy cozy
in any weather. Sphagnum
is worked bottom up with 1x1 ribbing throughout, making for a stretchy fabric
that provides a more personalized fit. In addition, the ribbing creates
extra pockets in the fabric for warm air to get trapped. It’s a versatile
hat that’s sure to get plenty of use.

A great addition to a man’s everyday wardrobe, the
classically-styled Traverse cardigan features attractive color
work that adds interest without being too loud. The shawl collar creates a
clean look with a cozy feel, and the raglan yoke provides a relaxed fit. A
yarn like Brooklyn Tweed Shelter makes for an extremely light-weight but warm
sweater. The color work is subtle and masculine, and designed to be
conveniently worked all on the right side. Traverse is knit bottom up
seamlessly in the round, then steeked to open the cardigan front. The
shawl collar is picked up after steeking and worked with short row shaping.
