Laura Aylor Derecho $6.50

Untitled 1

Laura Aylor shares the story of her Derecho shawl, "Derecho- Spanish for ‘direct or straight ahead’. A derecho is a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. One of these storms hit here in the eastern United States while I was working on my second knit of this pattern."

A triangular shawl knit modularly in two directions to produce a pattern of interconnected stripes. Two circular needles are used to knit on one side at a time while keeping the other side’s stitches live.

Techniques: garter stitch, knit in front and back increase, picking up stitches
Finished Measurements: small – wingspan 51”, depth 22”; large - wingspan 66”, depth 32”

Yardage by value in samples -
Small: light - 195, medium - 370, dark - 130
Large: light - 390, medium - 340, dark - 440

Note: If you are using Tosh Merino Light or another yarn with 420 yards/skein for the largest size, you may be able to get by with just one skein of the dark color by leaving off the last stripe on section 7 and then making the border in the medium color instead of the dark. (This is to keep from having a stripe next to the border that is the same color.) You will need about 35 more yards of the medium to do this.
